good people

last saturday i went to the syarahan at the mosque right, and ustazah habsah said something that really got my attention.
'tak rugi jadik orang baik.'
translated, it means it pays to be a good person.
is that true? is it worthwhile to be good? that statement got to me cos i'm always wondering whether every single human being on this planet is essentially a good person. and whether conceit, greed, rudeness etc are just a tiny facet of our lives.
but what about criminals? how are they good people when murders and rapes and robberies constitute their lives?
ohwell. it's one of those things that will remain debatable til the cows come home.
on sunday gwyneth paltrow nearly brought me to tears. on oprah primetime she was describing how her dad took her to paris for the first time when she was 10. her dad asked her whether she knew the reason why he did all that. she said no and he replied:
'i want you to see paris for the first time with the man who will always love you no matter what.'
